Elana Ernst

2022 Montgomery County, MD Youth Poet Laureate

 

Elana Ernst is thirteen and Rock Creek park is practically her back yard.When asked, she saysshe lives in DC because the border is a block away and she grew up there, but in reality, shelives in Montgomery County. She loves running and is passionate about her writing (both herpoetry and prose). Her accomplishments range from being published in the Lake Eerie InkTeen Anthology, which she didnʼt know was supposed to just be for writers who lived inCleveland, Ohio until after it was printed, to one of her poems being hung beside a photographat the Phillips collection in part of the Centennial Exhibition, to writing one and a halffull-length-unpublished novels. Sheʼs been thinking in poetry for as long as she can remember,started writing it when she was in second grade, and got serious about it during COVID. After school shut down in 2020, she went on a more than 100 day poetry-writing streak. She was inthe Montgomery County Middle School Honors Chorus in 2020, loves to sing, and can be foundlistening to musicals pretty much all the time as she dreams about being on Broadway. She iscurrently knitting a sweater, in the middle of too many books to keep track of, and hoping to becast as the lead in her middle school musical.
